Job Opening: Transportation Planner

TRANSPORTATION PLANNER

The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission is accepting applications for Transportation Planner. Under the direction of the Director of Transportation Planning and Funding, this position conducts work duties for the Metropolitan Planning Organization (Urban MPO) and the Regional Transportation Planning Organization (Rural RTPO) transportation planning programs. The position would involve ownership of certain tasks but also provide support and contribute to the overall transportation planning team. Duties include the development of the first RTPO regional transportation plan, coordination with member jurisdictions and regulatory agencies and public participation. Additional duties include collecting, maintaining, and analyzing transportation and land use data under a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) environment, technical data analysis, report writing, and effectively summarizing the data for presentations. The incumbent will be the lead presenter for some activities, while also gathering and sharing information to support other planners. The position involves significant local travel especially with the RTPO work tasks because we’re in the process of forming the RTPO.

Desired skills and experience:

  • Knowledge of transportation and land use planning
  • Interest and experience in research methods and GIS .
  • Demonstrated experience with: research and technical writing skills; ability to gather, organize, and analyze information of a technical nature.
  • Effective oral/written/presentation communication skills; ability to deal effectively with the public.
  • Proficient in Microsoft products, Word, Access, and Excel.
  • Possesses a valid current driver’s license (field work required and significant local travel involved).
  • Experience in working with a public agency is a plus

Minimum qualifications include:

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, planning, urban studies, geography, or related field; with a minimum of two (2) years of related experience.  Additional education and experience are valued and will be rewarded in the final negotiated compensation.

MVRPC serves an innovative multi-county region of one million people in the area encompassing Dayton, OH (southwest Ohio). The agency provides planning services to member jurisdictions, and also functions as the MPO for the Dayton area and is currently in the process of becoming a Regional Transportation Planning Organization (RTPO) for Darke, Preble, and Shelby Counties in southwest Ohio.

Of the five day work week, our office is currently working three days in the office and two days remotely from home.  We closely monitor changes in COVID-19 data for our area and we will continue to adjust the work from home days accordingly.  MVRPC’s office is located in downtown Dayton, Ohio.  We continue to host and attend teleconference and in person meetings.
